Promoting Tourism Collaboration and Talent Development
Providence University in Taichung, Taiwan, and Amakusa City in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, held a signing ceremony on July 14 for a Memorandum of Friendly Exchange. The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in the fields of tourism and human resource development. In the future, Providence University will offer courses focused on Amakusa and plans to send students to visit the city next summer to deepen cultural understanding and practical engagement.
Providence University is a Catholic private university located in Taichung City, with six colleges in both liberal arts and sciences and a student population of over 10,000. Known for its strong emphasis on international education, the university established a partnership with Amakusa High School in 2023 to promote mutual student exchanges.
President Dr. Szu-Ling Lin of Providence University stated, “The Sakitsu Village, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, is not only a valuable tourism resource but also holds deep spiritual significance.” She announced that the university will offer special lectures on Amakusa’s tourism and culture within its Department of Tourism. Dr. Lin also expressed the university’s openness to welcoming students from Amakusa and encouraged them to return and contribute to their local communities after studying in Taiwan.
Mayor Shoji Baba of Amakusa City also expressed his hopes: “We hope the students of Providence University will experience the history and spirituality of the Hidden Christians and help share Amakusa’s unique charm with the world.”
